Do you own a veteran horse?
Horses are generally classed as 'veteran' once they reach 15 years and above. As horses grow older, their needs change with regards to care and management. If you have a veteran horse read our article 'Caring For Your Veteran Horse' provided by the Veteran Horse Welfare Society.

Once your horse reaches its veteran stage of life it doesn't have to mean that you can't stop enjoying showing and riding. You just have to make sure that you undertake activities at a level that suits your horse's health and fitness. 'Veteran Horse Showing' is run by the Veteran Horse Society. Veteran Horse Showing hold the only affiliated showing series for older horses in the UK. Members of Veteran Horse Showing can enjoy a wide range of showing classes and Veteran Horse Dressage. Robert Whitaker Wins British Open Show Jumping Championships - Again!

Robert Whitaker retains the title at the British Open Show Jumping Championships on Sunday for the third time running. Robert claimed the £25,000 prize on his mother's 14 year old gelding 'Lacroix' who he rode throughout the rigorous 4 day event. In second place came Nathalie Vand De Mei (NED) and in third place Robert Smith (GBR).

Robert Whitaker began competing in Show Jumping at the age of 8 and now at 26 years old is ranked second with the British Show Jumping Association. It is plain to see that Robert is following in the footsteps of his father John Whitaker and Uncle, Michael Whitaker and is definitely a budding star for British Show Jumping.

British Open Show Jumping - Extra Tickets Released

Despite the UK recession looming over us, the tickets for the British Open Show Jumping Championships are selling like hot cakes!

Tickets for Friday have sold out, with a record number of tickets sold for Friday's event. However, the organizers have now released additional tickets to avoid disappointing some of the people who want to attend the event on Friday the 17th of April.

FEI Launch Online Equestrian Video Network - FEITV.org

FEITV.org was launched on the 19th of March, offering users videos and live coverage from National and International equestrian events.

Coverage from major FEI events will include:

Rolex FEI World Cup TM Jumping
HSBC FEI World Cup TM Eventing
FEI World Cup TM Dressage and Driving
Meydan FEI Nations Cup TM

Users can choose to watch footage from the video archive or see live footage from around the globe. The first live coverage is today (22nd March 09) this season's final qualifies of the Rolex FEI World Cup TM Jumping in the Netherlands.

The Cost

According to FEI.TV, the online footage can be accessed through a combination of free-to-air and subscription. I have had a good look around the site and can't find any information regarding the 'free-to-air' content. If you select our chosen footage you get taken to the subscription page.

The subscription fees for accessing the footage are in US Dollars or Euros, at current exchange rates, GBP subscription prices are:

Spring has finally sprung, the sun is shining and the grass is starting to grow again - happy days! We can de-rug the horses and let them start to enjoy the grass, but as the grass grows horse owners need to be fully aware of the risk of laminitis. Read our article on laminitis, what is its, what causes it, how to spot it and most importantly.. how to prevent it.

If your horse develops laminitis you have 12 hours before the damage is irreversible so understanding what to look for is essential.

The War Against Mud Fever

Horse Owners in the UK are well accustomed to long, dark winters bringing cold wet conditions. If that wasn't bad enough, horse owners also have to be on guard against the threat of mud fever through the soggy, muddy months of winter. The increasingly wet weather has seen fields turn to a muddy sludge, with grass disappearing under a thick bog of wet mud. As inconvenient as this is, it also increases the chance of your horse getting mud fever. This can cause pain and illness for your horse and it needs to be recognised, treated and prevented through the winter months.

Stop the Inhumane Transportation of Horses to Slaughter. - WSPA Campaign

Thousands of horses every year are transported from Spain to Italy to be slaughtered for meat. The Italians prefer to market their horse meat as 'Italian Horse Meat' and therefore have the horses transported from Spain to Italy, to be slaughtered in Italy. This means that horses can be subjected to cramped and cruel conditions spending days stood up in a horse box sometimes with no food or water. The WSPA are running a campaign 'Handle with Care' to stop the inhumane transportation of horses for slaughter, read the WSPA article.

During October the WSPA will meet the European Health Commissioner 'Androulla Vassiliou', aiming to hand over 50,000 letters supporting their campaign. The 'Handle with Care' campaign aims to improve the conditions in which horses are transported on their way to the slaughter houses in Italy.

The WSPA currently have 42,000 letters from all over Europe, they need more people to sign letters before the meeting in October, this could stop the inhumane transportation of live horses across Europe - we can all help and it only takes 2 minutes of your time! The EquiPortal Website Guide

There's loads of information and tools on EquiPortal for horse riders, but the more we add, the more overwhelming it can be for new members.

We want everyone to make the most of EquiPortal, so we have created the EquiPortal Guide.

This new gadget sits on the homepage and keeps you informed of everything that is happening on the website. It highlights the latest horse news, forum postings, photo albums, competitions, articles and blogs together with other announcements from EquiPortal.

But that's not all...

At the bottom of the gadget it rates how much of the website you are making use of as a “utilisation %”. Click the link below the rating and a check list will be displayed that lists everything you can do on the site. Mark each item as you complete the step to update your utilisation %. A help popup can be viewed for each item providing further details. As new features are added, we will update the utilisation check list.

The Guide shows you what's new & what you can do!

You can add the guide to your EquiPortal homepage in the usual way, either by using the Gadgets main menu option or the Gadget Quick Add drop down list beneath the main menu. We hope you find it useful.

A Better Equestrian Rider Homepage

You may already be aware that you can:

Search the whole web with Google, or search EquiPortal news, forums and event calendars.
Use gadgets specifically of interest to people who love horses, together with other tools and games.
Customise your homepage by adding, removing and reordering the many handy gadgets we provide.

You can now iconise your gadgets (i.e. replace them with an icon) by clicking the arrow on their top left corner.

Q) Why would you want to do that?

A) It makes it much easier to spot new information on the website.

When the main gadgets are iconised they will display a flashing red light to highlight when they have something new to show you. This feature is included for the following gadgets:

Horse Chat – will flash when someone speaks in a chat room.
Horse Forum – will flash when someone posts in the forum.
Horse News – will flash to indicate fresh news has arrived.
Horsey Blogs – will flash when a blog has been updated.
Horse Photo Album – will flash when a new album is added.
Articles Index – will flash when an article has been added or updated.

Simply click on the icon to restore the main gadget content.
An additional bonus is that the homepage will load more quickly and your homepage looks less cluttered.

Adding Photos to EquiPortal forums and articles

We have now made it very simple for anyone to add photos to forum postings or articles (including horse and rider profile pages) on http://www.equiportal.co.uk/.

When contributing to the forum or articles you will see two new links at the bottom of the page:

1) Upload a photo from your PC
Use this option to launch picnik. Picnik allows you to simply browse to a photo on your PC and upload it to the web. Once uploaded you can optionally crop, resize, add text and shapes, add effects and frames. If you don't want to make any changes just click SAVE and we will automatically resize the picture to make it suitable for a web page.

2) Insert a photo from your EquiPortal gallery
Simply click the link and select from the pictures that you have previously uploaded via option 1.

Whichever option you use, the selected pictures are automatically inserted in to your posting or article at the cursor position.

Channel 5 are looking for a horse mad mum to feature on a documentary about mums who are addicted to something (in a fun way), we need a horse addict! The idea is that this would be a light hearted look into the life of someone who simply can't turn away that horse that needs a home, taking in the wafes and strays no matter what the cost. I certainly know a few people like that! The person must have children as the TV crew want to see life from their pespective. Do you know anyone? Let me know if you are interested by dropping me an e-mail with your contact number and relevant e-mail address. I will then pass your details on to our contact at Channel 5. Go on be brave it will be fun and something to record and keep for generations to come - this is your chance to dazzle the nation with your horse addiction!

Google have just launched their new virtual world http://www.lively.com/ and EquiPortal were quickly on the scene to create our own room for you to play in.

We have made our room editable so feel free to add / move furnuture, stream your favourite utube horse video on the TV and chat to anyone who drops in.

How many times have you told people about yourself and your horses in different forums and websites? Now you can use our wiki to create a personal profile for yourself and a profile for each of your horses (including pictures and formatted text) and link to these profiles from wherever you like (emails, blogs, forum signatures / postings etc.). Best of all, unlike most profiles, you are in complete control of the content. This feature is an extension to the articles section.

We hope you enjoy creating profiles to show off your horses and to let people know more about you. If enough people create profiles we will also add a gadget to the homepage that lists all the profiles.

Equine Articles
This new section uses wiki technology to allow you to easily create and publish your own articles on EquiPortal. Do you have knowledge you would like to share with us? Here are a few ideas:

Add a review about your new equipment or the last horse book you read.
Add an article about your horse's breed using pictures of your own horse.
Write about riding techniques that work for you.
Promote horse campaigns you care about by writing an article.

You don't need to be an expert or a great writer and you can choose to allow other people to edit your article so we can produce pages as a group effort.

Facebook. EquiPortal now has a group and page on Facebook. If you are a Facebook member and enjoy our site, please add yourself as a fan on our page: www.facebook.com/pages/EquiPortal-Your-Window-On-the-Equine-World/16587378637

Horse Chat Rooms. Remember to set your status to Available in the chat gadget to allow other members to invite you to chat with them.

Forum Topics

Quiz Nights. We have proposed the idea of a horsey quiz night, with all horse related questions and answers. If you would like this event to go ahead let us know in the quiz night forum topic.

Barefoot. We have been talking about barefoot horses quite a lot this month. Search our forum for "barefoot" to find the various postings.

Remember to check our Topic of the week forum to learn more about other members.

You can now add our Horse Chat gadget to your Google Homepage or to your own website.

Click here to add the gadget to your website.

The gadget is a cut down version of the one on our homepage.

To post messages in the gadget you have to add your user key in the gadgets settings so it knows who you are. To find your unique user key, log in to www.EquiPortal.co.uk and click on the My Profile button in the top right hand corner.
